The time to heat or cool a substance to a desired point may depend on the type of substance. In some cases, a tempering may be used to obtain the most stable phase of a substance. For example, in the manufacture of some alloys, such as steel, a slow cooling of the molten alloy may yield the best results. By slowly cooling a molten alloy, one may obtain a higher quality product. For example, in the manufacture of steel, one may use an electric arc furnace (EAF) to melt one or more scrap metals, including iron, steel, scrap steel and the like. During the EAF process, scrap metals may be melted by a flux in combination with steel or other molten metals. The steel or molten metals may solidify at a certain temperature. The scrap metals may therefore be melted during the EAF process at a temperature above the desired solidification temperature. The molten metal may be transferred to a holding furnace (e.g., a holding furnace such as a ladle or a holding furnace such as a barrel) for a holding period. The holding period may depend on the composition of the molten metal. For example, when manufacturing steel, a holding period may be from about 5-50 minutes. During the holding period, the molten metal may cool and solidify. The holding period may therefore be used to obtain a desired microstructure in the steel. For example, when manufacturing steel, the molten metal may be held to obtain a proper percentage of carbon or carbon contents. The steel may be transferred from the holding furnace to a rolling mill for further processing. For example, in a continuous casting process, the molten steel may be poured into a mold. After casting, the mold may be transferred to the rolling mill. When the molten metal is cast in the mold, the cooling time is relatively short. When the molten metal is poured into a mold, the molten metal may solidify immediately. In comparison, after the molten metal is poured into the mold, the mold may be transferred to the rolling mill.
